Three Arguments Based

Introduction : An argument is a statement meant to convince another person about your point of view. In these types of questions, your personal biases and opinions or any prior knowledge about the subject matter should never be considered. Here, you are given a statement followed by a set of arguments related to that statement. These arguments may support or contradict the statement. You are expected to assess whether each argument is strong or weak.

Concept of Strong and Weak Arguments : -

Strong Argument An argument is a strong one, if it is directly related to the given statement and the reason given in the argument addresses all the points put forward in the given statement.

Weak Argument An argument is a weak one, if it is not directly related to the given statement and it does not address all the points put forward in the given statement.

Points to keep in mind while solving and practicing these questions.

While you make a decision about the important questions, it is desirable to be able to differentiate between ‘strong’ and ‘weak’ arguments so far as they relate to the questions.

For ‘weak’ arguments, the most important thing to note is that they may or may not be directly related to the question and may be of minor importance.

Then based on the question, you have to determine which argument is strong and which one is weak.

Points taken into consideration while choosing a strong or a weak argument.

Strong Arguments are :

supported by established fact/experiences/logic/ prevailing notions of truth.

correct.

desirable (or harmful in case of negative argument).

properly related with the statement.

Weak Arguments are

ambiguous or confusing arguments.

too simple to be arguments.

goes against established facts.

does not get support from past experiences.

does not get support from logic and common sense.

assumption based arguments.

goes against prevailing notions of truth.

Three Arguments Based : Here, we are given three arguments and we have to study them, find which is/are true ?

Direction : The question given below consists of a statement, followed by three arguments numbered I, II and III. you have to decide which of the arguments is/are 'strong' argument (s) and which is/are 'weak' argument (s) and accordingly choose your answer from the alternatives given below the question ?

Statement : Should all the students graduating in any disciplines desirous of pursuing post-graduation in the subjects of their choice be allowed to enroll themselves in the post-graduate courses?

Arguments :

I. Yes, the students are the best judge of their capabilities and they should not be restricted from joining post-graduation courses.

II. No, the students need to study relevant subjects in graduate courses to enroll in post-graduate courses and the students must fulfil such conditions.

III. No, there are not enough institutes offering post-graduate courses which can accommodate all the graduates desirous of seeking post-graduation education of their own choice.

Solution (c) : The students cannot be enrolled in the courses just on the basis of their interests but their compatibility with the same also matters. So, Argument I does not hold. Besides, lack of institutions is no criteria to deny post-graduate Courses to students. Hence, Argument IIl does not hold. But Argument II holds as it is a genuine reason,

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) last came out with a set of guidelines for licensing of new banks in the private sector on February 22, 2013. The process of licensing culminated with the announcement by the RBI vide its Press Release dated April 2,2014 that it would grant “in-principle” approval to two applicants who would set up new banks in the private sector within a period of 18 months.

While preparing these guidelines, the Reserve Bank recognized the need for an explicit policy on banking structure in India keeping in view the recommendations of the Committee on Banking Sector Reforms (Chairman: Shri M. Narasimham) (1998), Committee on Financial Sector Reforms (Chairman: Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan) (2009) and other viewpoints.

Accordingly, the Reserve Bank placed on its website on August 27, 2013 a policy discussion paper on Banking Structure in India – The Way Forward. One of the observations in the discussion paper was that in India, where extending banking services to the underserved and unserved sections of the population is a challenge, there is merit in considering access to bank credit and services through expansion of small banks in unbanked and under-banked regions.

The security of the investor's money is not related to the size of the bank. Besides even after consolidation, the number of investors, their amounts and hence the duties shall remain the same and so no employees will be redundant. Reducing the number of smaller banks will also not affect the mutual competition among the banks. Thus, none of the arguments holds strong.

Every time you have a can of aerated drink (read cola/ fizzy drinks) you get the pleasure for a while, but,we are unknowingly subjecting our body to innumerable risks.

Use of artificial sweetener also leads to diabetes and thus children should be strictly restricted from consuming all kinds of aerated drinks.
One can of soft drink contains 3 times a child's recommended maximum daily intake of sugar. This leads to undue pressure on organs, resulting in a number of lifestyle diseases.
When tired, stop consuming soft drinks and go for fresh juices and water. One glass of aerated drink can decrease your metabolism 2 times and also destroys fat burning enzymes.
Consumption of soft drink spikes the blood sugar instantly that further leads to insulin burst and in return liver converts it to fat leading to obesity.
Soft drinks are the leading cause of tooth decay. In general the pH level of most soft drinks is 3.2 which is quite high. The acid and sugar in drink react with tooth enamel and damage them.
Quite a few studies say that use of artificial sweeteners like saccharin and sucralose decreases the chances of pregnancy in women. And the presence of caffeine decreases the sperm count in men and in many cases it decreases the quality too. So, both diet and regular soft drinks are harmful.

The use of 'only' in I makes it invalid. Also, it is the duty of the government to save its citizens from intake of any harmful products, even if they like them. So, II does not hold strong. Besides, a product must not be banned unless its harmful effects have been proved. So, III holds strong. Lastly, we cannot blindly follow the decisions taken by the other countries. So, IV also does not hold.

Hence the correct option is C.
